1) For a classic mood...
You can't go wrong with the classics. If you're awake enough, the silent film Nosferatu is about as creepy and classic as you can get, but more iconic of course are the Universal monster films Dracula and Wolf Man. Black and white, spooky, and artful, they're the perfect Halloween mood-setter!
2) For a real scare...
If you really want a film to give you the chills, the two vampire and werewolf films most likely to place you on the edge of your seat are Dog Soldiers and 30 Days of Night. Both are survival horror at their best, full of suspense and just the right level of goriness.
3) For (unintentional) comedy...
Sometimes you just need a good laugh, and some of the best laughs come from movies that you're really not sure if they were trying to be any good or not. The bizarreness of Andy Warhol's Blood for Dracula is great for viewing with groups big and small, but if you really want a heckle-fest, I recommend the Howling III for just sheer WTF absurdity.
And yet we love to watch it anyway... |
4) A Tribute to Wes Craven...
Horror legend Wes Craven passed away this year, so after you watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, check out some of his strange, lesser watched projects such as Cursed and A Vampire in Brooklyn. If you're doing a thorough Craven marathon, save Cursed especially for late at night; nothing makes the absurdity of a werewolf flipping off a bunch of teenagers more hilarious than sleep deprivation.
Happy Halloween, everyone, and happy watching!
